Welcome to 1 to 34 Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates benefits everyone of all ages and abilities, regardless of their level of fitness. It is a mind and body conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine in order to improve your overall stability and posture. It will also improve your overall flexibility, tone your stomach, strengthen your back and lengthen and stretch your muscles. Regular Pilates practise can help improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension.
Why 1 to 34? Originally Joseph Pilates designed a series of 34 mat based exercises that flowed one to the other. The exercises focused on working the core muscles (abdominals and back) to improve strength and flexibility for the whole body. These exercises are used as the basis of the classes, but are developed and modified to create variation and interest for all levels of fitness.
Pilates will also encourage you to think about how you can improve your everyday movement and help your body to work at its optimal level at all times. It addresses underlying structural imbalances in the body which can create pain and difficulty with movement. The whole body and mind is involved to create balance and a feeling of well-being and energy.
